School Meals on Field Trips: Allergies and Balanced Menus

Meal planning is crucial during field trips. Here’s how our school handles full board, packed lunches, and student allergies.

Food: The True Fuel for Your Educational Project

When planning a school trip, attention naturally focuses on the cultural itinerary, transportation arrangements, or room assignments for students. However, there is one key element that determines the overall success of the trip: meal planning.

A field trip is a particularly demanding experience for children’s metabolisms. Far from the comforts and familiar surroundings of home, students will walk a lot during city tours, expend energy during sports activities or orienteering courses in the forest, and engage their minds intensely while visiting museums. To keep up this sustained pace for several days, a healthy, balanced, filling, and restorative diet is absolutely essential. Without the necessary energy, fatigue builds up, concentration drops sharply during visits, and tensions within the group can quickly arise.

Beyond its purely physiological function, mealtime on a school trip is a highlight of group life. It’s one of the few moments of the day when the entire group takes a break. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the morning’s discoveries, share impressions, and, above all, learn the fundamental rules of “living together” and table manners.

Group catering designed for young people

At Domaine des Acacias, in Indre-et-Loire, we know that feeding 150 or 200 children isn’t something that can be improvised. Our integrated group catering service was specifically designed for young people, from elementary school through high school.

Our hot meals are served in a spacious, bright, and welcoming dining hall designed to smoothly accommodate the staggered arrival of multiple classes at the same time. This prevents the endless lines that often lead to chaos. When it comes to the food itself, we rise to the challenge of balancing two key requirements: strictly adhering to the nutritional guidelines mandated by law (such as the EGalim Act, which regulates the quality of meals served in institutional settings) while offering dishes that children truly enjoy. Fresh vegetables, high-quality starchy foods, appropriate protein sources, and dairy products are prepared in a way that ensures plates are cleared and every student leaves with the energy they need.

Strict management of Individualized Care Plans (PAI): our top priority

This is undoubtedly the greatest source of anxiety for school principals and parents: how can we ensure the safety of a child with severe food allergies when they are away from home and their usual cafeteria?

Managing allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, lactose, eggs, etc.) and specific dietary requirements (pork-free, vegetarian diets based on personal or religious beliefs) is an integral part of our daily work as an accredited camp.

Our internal protocol is extremely rigorous. Well before your arrival in Touraine, as soon as your program is confirmed, we ask you to provide us with the comprehensive and official list of your students’ Individualized Allergy Plans (PAI). Our head chef then reviews each case individually. The weekly menus are carefully scrutinized, and alternative dishes are prepared with the same care as standard meals, ensuring there is absolutely no cross-contamination during preparation in the kitchen. During meal service in the cafeteria, special attention and ongoing communication with accompanying teachers ensure that specific meal trays are clearly identified. This level of vigilance guarantees the absolute safety of every child and provides complete peace of mind for the teaching staff.

Picnics and packed lunches: total flexibility for your field trips

The Loire Valley and the Centre region offer an incredible wealth of tourist attractions. From the famous ZooParc de Beauval and Futuroscope in Poitiers to combined tours of several major Loire Valley châteaux, it’s extremely common for your field trips to last a full day, from morning until mid-afternoon. In this context, planning to return to the estate for a hot lunch is not only time-consuming but also financially impractical in terms of coach transportation costs.

To offer you complete logistical flexibility, the Domaine des Acacias prepares complete, hearty, and easy-to-carry packed lunches (or picnics). On the very morning of your excursion, our team provides your drivers or tour guides with large coolers containing cold, hygienic, and nutritionally balanced (typically including a variety of carefully prepared sandwiches, a mixed salad, a seasonal fruit, a dairy product or cheese, and bottles of water). Thanks to this service, which is included in the full-board package, your classes can enjoy lunch right on the expansive lawns of the Château de Chambord or in the designated rest areas at the Beauval Zoo, thereby maximizing valuable hands-on learning time.

A Practical Tool for Education on Sustainable Development

Going on a field trip and staying at a lodging center is also a wonderful educational opportunity to raise awareness among the younger generation about the challenges of sustainable development and ecology.

We work closely with teachers to encourage school groups to adopt eco-friendly habits during meals. We set up fun recycling stations at the end of the dining line. We actively combat food waste by encouraging dialogue during meal service: children are invited to serve themselves and ask for portions that match their actual appetite, knowing they can always go back for seconds. Finally, we regularly feature products sourced from short supply chains and local producers in Touraine, allowing students to make the connection between the region they’re visiting and what’s on their plates.
